The Work

What depth guidance actually is, and what happens in a session

The dark at midday

Everything is fine. Everything is collapsing.

Both are true, and that is the difficulty. Nothing has failed. There is nothing to point at, no event to blame, no moment where it went wrong. By every visible measure you are doing well.

The dark at midday is the place in a life where neither strength nor wisdom is enough. Samson had the strength. Solomon had the wisdom. Neither escaped the fall into chaos and despair — and neither went down in the dark. They went down at noon, at the height of their powers, in full light.

More strength does not help here. More knowledge does not help. You have run on both for twenty years and they brought you precisely to this place.

What is needed is the one thing you have never let yourself have. Genuine rest. Peace.

And in a rare quiet moment of honest reflection, you may find you do not know how to rest, or what peace would even mean. You may throw the idea out as weakness. As self-help nonsense. As something for people with less to carry.

That is why it blindsides you. You cannot recognize what you have never known.

Because we would not face our own dark, we cannot face the dark at midday. It is the eclipse of ourselves.

Who says so — Aaron Bui.

What this is

Not therapy. No fix. No motivational talk.

More is not what you need. You have spent your life in striving mode, and the striving is not a problem to be solved — it is the thing that carried you here, and it is the thing that will not carry you further.

We have forgotten what we have forgotten. What follows is the work of rediscovering it: everything judged poorly, neglected, and denied, in ourselves and in the people around us.

I work the layer beneath. Not the decision in front of you. The pattern that makes the decision impossible.

I help you look into your own mirror and meet the self you have rejected. I stand there with you and refuse to let you look away.

The road runs backward

You want clarity, and you want it now, because the problem is expensive and the meter is running.

The road to clarity runs against everything that has ever worked for you.

Clarity comes only through radical honesty. Radical honesty comes only in stillness. Stillness comes only out of rest.

Rest Stillness Honesty Clarity

Read it in the direction you would normally work and you will see the difficulty. You cannot think your way to clarity and reverse-engineer the rest afterward. The sequence does not run that way. Every attempt to start at the far end is why you are circling.

This is the part that costs you something. Rest is not a break. Rest is giving up the position from which you have been managing everything — and that position is the one you are most afraid to leave.

What actually happens

A session runs sixty minutes and it has a shape.

Session Setting (first ten)

Beginning with grounding of attention and presence. Next establishing agreement of the goal of the session. Clarifying purpose, roles, responsibilities, and procedures. Disclosures and end-of-session expectations.

Discovery (the next twenty)

Guided search for the key signals or clusters that are responsive. They indicate aspects unrecognized, wounds unhealed, functions, and energies repressed. They are the parts of us that are causing disturbances and disruptions in our lives because they are seeking our attention.

Facing (the next twenty)

Guided to recognizing and acknowledging the key aspects. Working through meeting and confronting the key aspects to find clarity. You are supported and safe in facing the aspect of yourself at the edge of your comfort zone. We nudge you forward to understanding.

Grounding (the last ten)

Working through experience and understanding of the aspects newly recognized. Discerning perception and perspective. Relating to the aspects in a healthy and grounded way.

Home Assignment — At times, when appropriate, Coach may suggest an activity to do after at home.

Post-Session Care — Within a day you get a short written follow-up: what you discovered and the agreed action plan. Set next session as appropriate.

The patterns underneath

The Capable Sufferer

You became the one everyone leans on. It worked. It kept you employed, married, respected, needed. It also means nobody has asked how you are in eleven years — and you stopped asking a long time before that. The pattern guards a fear that has never been tested: that the leaning is the relationship.

The Duty-Bond Person

Every domain is under management. The business. The family. The body. The calendar. Management feels like control and reads to everyone around you as responsibility. It is also how a person keeps a safe distance from their own life without anyone noticing — least of all them.

The Knowledgable Doubter

You have run the analysis eleven times and it comes out differently each time. That is not an information problem. A decision that will not resolve is usually a decision you have already made and cannot yet afford to have made.

Who this is not for

Anyone who wants reassurance more than truth.

Anyone looking for a technique, a hack, or a state to manage.

Anyone who needs clinical care. That is a licensed clinician's work. If that is where you are, I will say so in the first ten minutes and point you toward it — and I will not charge you for the hour.

You do not need to be in crisis to come. Most people who sit down here are doing well by every measure anyone can see. That is the point.

When you're fine but not, let's talk.
